It might be Time to Move On!

Moving is known to be one of the most stressful experiences in anyone’s life, whether that’s moving house, school or job. The Optima team have recently moved office which all said and done has actually gone pretty smoothly…easy to say now we are well settled into our new home!!

Well anyway it got me thinking about all the times in life we experience moving, be that a new school, a new job or house. As a recruitment company we see times when people are in a dilemma about moving jobs. How do you know it’s the right time to move and how long you should stay in a job?

Well if you listen to what the celebs say then you might believe 3 years is the maximum length of time anyone should stay in a job according to actor Peter Capaldi a.k.a Dr Who, when he stepped down from the Dr Who role after four years. He stated “I’ve never done one job for three years. This is the first time I’ve done this and I feel it’s time for me to move on to different challenges.”

We’ve put together a top 5 list of signs that say you might need to start looking for your next job!

1) Are you are constantly bored?

If you’re always watching the clock and spend more time at the water machine than at your desk, then it may be time to move on. If work is challenging and engaging then it stands to reason you won’t even know where the day has gone.

2) The feeling of dread every morning?

Everyone has a bad day at work and there is no getting away from that – especially on a Monday morning. However, if you are letting that feeling of dread take over your weekend then you know there is something not quite right.

3) Have you seen horrible bosses?

If you’re feeling the same way Jason Bateman et al felt in ‘Horrible Bosses’ then it might be a pretty good sign you are ready for a move. If you’ve seen the film you’ll know what I mean!!

4) You know deep down

If you’re ready to move on you will probably know already that it’s the right thing to do. If it wasn’t – then it wouldn’t even be on your mind!

5) You are not challenged

Everyone feels a lack of motivation at some point, but if it’s happening more often than not then it could be time. If your work is becoming stagnant and offers no room to utilise your skills then this is when you need to think long and hard about moving on.
Moving job is a scary thing, but staying in a job that makes you feel demotivated, bored and unfulfilled is probably an even scarier thought.

A famous person once said:

The only way to do great work is love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle!
