5 Questions to Ask Yourself before Applying

Imagine you’ve found the job of your dreams!

What do you do next?

Do you upload your CV and cover letter you’ve been using for every job application since you started looking or do you stop and think about your next steps?

If you think you should apply for the job straight away then you definitely need to ask yourself 5 questions before you apply for your next job. So here it goes!

1. Have you updated your social media profiles?

Social media has made a big impact both personally and professionally, so it’s safe to assume a prospective employer will be checking your social media profiles. They will probably start with LinkedIn, but there is every chance they will look at Facebook and Twitter too. So make sure you don’t have posts you wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see

2. Have you researched the company?

Check out the company website and read what it’s like to work there. If you’re looking for a ‘work hard, play hard’ atmosphere then it’s pointless sending your CV to a business that doesn’t share the same idea. Check the company’s social media profiles because that will give you an insight into the culture of the company.

3. Do you know anyone?

Do your research and find out if you know anyone that works at the company? Studies have shown that you are 10 times more likely to land a job if it’s accompanied by an employee referral. If you know someone at the company, connect with them and make the most of the relationship!

4. Have you checked the location?

Location is a very practical fact to consider when you are looking to apply for your next job. How far would you have to commute to get to work and are the transport links good? If it’s likely to be a long commute how would this impact your work life balance, particularly if you have a family to consider.

5. Have you tailored your CV and cover letter?

Recruiters and employees will always identify a cover letter that hasn’t been tailored to their business. As a recruitment business we receive them all the time and it’s clear to distinguish them from the ones where candidates have taken their time to read the job specification and show how they meet specific criteria.

Always think before you leap into any job application and make sure you are giving yourself every opportunity to show yourself in the best light!
